I actually can't believe this is even a debate, and I'm so sorry to any new parents - especially new mums - who have to watch this. Especially on a bank holiday weekend when you're maybe gearing yourself up to get out and about - maybe even to get on a flight. Probably nervous exactly because of people like this having these attitudes. Look, I totally get why people don't like children in public spaces. Of course it's annoying if they're crying. And I also probably made ignorant comments too when I was childfree - but that's what they are - ignorant. Because guess what? Children are also humans. And they have every right to exist in public spaces as adults do. It's entitled to think otherwise. And if you don't like it: charter a private plane. Or get noise cancelling headphones. I hate the anti child narrative. Because even if you choose to be childfree (something I feel strongly about too, our right to be childfree) - you were a child once. But also - you need children to exist so there is a pilot to fly your plane in the future. Children who cry aren't 'misbehaving'. They're communicating that they're tired or overwhelmed or in pain. And guess what? 'disciplining them' is not going to diffuse the situation. It's going to make them more upset. But also - parents are also doing their best to diffuse situations. And they are terrified about going out in public in case their children behave like children. I've had awful plane journeys and the things that have helped have been all the wonderfully kind and empathetic adults who reassure me and who support me. I certainly aspire to be THAT human in the world. I wish society was more willing to let children be children and to help and support parents. Because also - lots of people literally can't go out in public without their children because childcare is so fu*king expensive. To the parents doing their best - I see you. And you and your child deserve to be in public spaces. I'd way rather a crying baby than a stag party - babies are too young to understand better. I'll try to find a clip to upload. Should children be allowed on public transport?
