‘Ink Splash II’ by El Anatsui may look like an abstract painting at first glance, but the illusion of swift, gestural brushstrokes and splashes were created through a painstaking process of weaving thousands of flattened bottle tops together with copper wire.
#ElAnatsui explains, ‘the most important thing is the transformation. The fact that these media, each identifying a brand of drink, are no longer going back to serve the same role but are elements that could generate some reflection, some thinking, or just some wonder…They are removed from their accustomed, functional context into a new one, and they bring along their histories and identities.’

bwdritos Hi @tate! I guess you must love this Japanese artist @kneesup_n. She talks to human consciousness with her “photography painting”... can’t wait to see her work at Tate... you will be the first who exhibit her amazing work in UK!

vickywalker_writer I brought a group of 10-11 year olds last month and after hearing what this was they said "oh so you can make art out of ANYTHING! Anything can be art"
