Meet the Common Bronzewing (Phaps chalcoptera)! This pigeon is widespread across Australia, where it lives in a variety of habitats including forests, deserts, and savannas. Structural coloration, rather than pigmentation, is the reason the plumage on its wings has an iridescent effect. What’s unique about its vibrant feathers is the range of color displayed on individual barbs; typically only one color is seen per barb.
