Still, even after growing up in my grandmother’s bakery and kitchen, I would’ve never guessed I’d start a bakery. I first began to realize the potential of @winniesbakery when I was featured in Baltimore Bride magazine. It granted me an amazing platform to showcase my work. Which, in turn revealed to me a desire to truly hone and express my artistic sensibilities. With nature as my muse I felt endlessly inspired to create through the medium of pastry and confection. ____________________________ As grateful as I was for such an incredible opportunity—something I knew but had not fully felt became quite clear. The immense underrepresentation of minorities. I now felt a deep sense of responsibility to be a presence to Black and POC. After the article I received many lovely emails speaking about how great it was to read my story or see a face like their own on the pages of a publication. However, I was also met with individuals who felt that it was to my benefit that “they” would’ve have never guess my cakes were made by a Black woman. As if, that was something I would find complimentary or acceptable to say to me. ____________________________ Since, I have made it my mission to be unshakably confident about being a Black, queer, female and chronically-ill business owner.
