I began drawing my mother’s face and hands, and then making oil paintings of the figure all throughout college. I’ve always wanted to do sculpture, but told myself (for God knows what reason- but I was young and we often fill our head with crazy things) that I couldn’t do contemporary figurative sculpture. I couldn’t see what that looked like for me or how my work transitioned into that field. I learned my current process, needle felting, about 7 years ago during my 3rd year at VCU. The first thing I felted was a small magenta heart, and I immediately thought of how I could finally make people. So my wool work began in the form of a doll- which isn’t that far-fetched because my mother has been collecting porcelain dolls all my life. But I was finally able to see these faces I loved to paint so much sitting in my hand, off the wall. And I ran with it, and I guess you can say I’m still running. Stumbling across wool and this process was unexpected, but has challenged me to think and make in a way that I think painting was no longer able to do. I can paint a person like nobody's business, but I wasn’t curious about anything past that. With wool, it’s like- what else can it do? Let’s find out. ⁣」2月20日 7時43分 - designsponge
