Ukai - A 1,300-Year-Old Japanese Summer Tradition🛥️✨
Cormorant fishing, called “ukai” in Japanese, is a traditional fishing method practiced on the banks of the Chikugo River, near the Harazuru Onsen hot spring town in Asakura. It is said to have a history of around 1,300 years.
Cormorant fishing takes place every year from May 20 through to the end of September. A string is attached to the necks of cormorants, a kind of water bird, which are then skillfully controlled by the fishermen to catch sweetfish and other river fish.🐟
A sightseeing boat runs until the end of August, from which you can see the moment the cormorants dive into the river and catch the fish right in front of you!😊 The cruise lasts for 50 minutes, and is a great opportunity to explore the river, making it a popular evening activity in the hot spring town.♨
