I walked beneath the tennis stadium, entering my first event at the CrossFit Games. At 21, I hoped to match the talent and grit of the other competitors.

As we lined up for our first event, “AMANDA,” which consisted of 9-7-5 repetitions of muscle-ups and squat snatches, I observed the other athletes and realized my attire was markedly different.

Thinking to myself, “Why on earth would anyone train in wooden shoes?”

Tag someone who has had a similar experience! It goes without saying, but in my well-worn Saucony shoes riddled with tiny holes from excessive use—the only pair I owned, since I couldn’t afford another—I held my own.
