Found in the mountains of Nepal and northern Myanmar, as well as in central China, red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) grow to be about the size of house cats. Solitary and shy, they use their bushy tails to keep warm while sleeping in their cold and rainy habitats. In the past, scientists have had trouble classifying this critter. It had once been considered a relative of the raccoon, then of the bear family. Now, scientists place red pandas in their own distinct family: Ailuridae.
