American pikas (Ochotona princeps) are small North American mammals that live on rocky slopes at high elevations. These rabbit relatives are well adapted to chilly temperatures and spend the warmer months foraging for flowers to build up "haypiles" of food near their dens in preparation for winter. Pikas sometimes make hundreds of foraging trips each day—particularly in late summer—and generally select plants that have more protein and are higher in water content.🌱
