Meet the bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis)! This nocturnal canid’s resemblance to bats isn’t just in the shape and size of its ears. Like bats, this fox prefers to feed on insects and leverages its large ears to listen for prey. Its favorite meals include termites and ants—and it even has small pointed teeth to efficiently chew them up. If insects are scarce, the fox will feed on bird eggs, chicks, or small rodents. It lives in eastern and southern Africa, inhabiting grasslands and savannas, especially in areas that have shorter grass.
