Between August and January, male Splendid Fairywrens (Malurus splendens) turn on the charm—and turn up the color of their plumage to a vibrant blue—for breeding season. When they’re not looking for a mate, males lose much of their color—with the exception of the hue along their wings and tails—and become mostly brown, like their female counterparts. These birds can be found across much of Australia, where they live in shrublands or woodlands with dense vegetation. They are insectivores, but also snack on seeds.
